In 2003 this colorful chandelier was purchased by MOCA through private donations and retitled Mille Colori. Several of these works were re-sited at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (now MOCA) for the Art of Glass exhibition in 1999 including the multicolored Isola di San Giacomo in Palude chandelier. The result was an electrifying unforgettable experience. In 1996 Chihuly created 15 enormous chandeliers placing them under bridges and across the Venetian canals as a tribute to the biennale Aperto Vetro. From vibrantly colored installations to his curling plantlike sculptures Chihuly is one of the most well-known glass artists of the 20 th and 21 stcenturies. Painting his designs on paper for other talented glassblowers to create in glass Chihuly continues to produce new and exciting works of art. Not letting this stop him Chihuly relied on the teamwork he learned in Venice to bring his art to life. Later in 1976 Chihuly was in a car accident that left him blind in one eye affecting his depth perception. ![]() This idea greatly influenced his approach to glassmaking.īy 1971 Chihuly founded the Pilchuck Glass School on the idea of artists teaching artists. Moving to Venice to continue his studies Chihuly was exposed to the importance of teamwork in glassmaking. Enrolling at the University of Wisconsin in the first program dedicated to glassmaking Chihuly studied under the pioneer of the American Studio Glass Movement Harvey K. Born in 1941 Chihuly was first introduced to glassmaking while studying interior design at the University of Washington. Often called "the world's greatest living artist" Dale Chihuly has single-handedly changed the glass world with his elaborate and extraordinary works. One of only 15 in the world Mille Colori (Italian for "one thousand colors”) measures 14 feet tall by 8 feet wide and is made up of 520 blown glass objects attached to a metal frame. Suspended from the ceiling at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Virginia’s only museum solely dedicated to contemporary art is a stunning glass chandelier by artist Dale Chihuly.
